It's that time of the year again, folks (k, so another day away but I'm just tired enough to burp up a random journal about it RITE NAOW). Fortunately for me, I dropped the emo-Valentines Hate back in high school because I know now that V'Day isn't just for couples, it's for anyone and everyone that you love to love and love to hate. It's the people you love that keep you going and it's the people you hate that keep you pushing and shoving, if just in entirely different ways. Because what would your life be without the people you detest? A little bit more enjoyable, surely. But what is life without conflict.
I'll say conflict is the essence of plot, and leave it at that.

At any rate, whether or not you've got someone's leg to hump someone to fondle be with on V'Day doesn't matter. What matters is that you acknowledge everyone and everyTHING that you even just like a little bit. I like to think that there are as many different shades of love as there are colors in the spectrum. You love your family- how you love your father, your mother, your brothers or sisters, is all different subtly different kinds of love. The same can be said from friend to friend. Your teachers. Your pets. Yourself.
Most assuredly yourself.
Love your feelings. Love the things you feel, love the things you see. Love the pain because it lets you know that yes, you are indeed alive and breathing. Love the loss because it lets you know you once had gained.
Love the bird you see land on the crosswalk sign, indignantly puffing up its feathers in the wind.
Love the clouds that you hope go away before the weekend.
Love the weather-- the snow, the wind, the hail, or the rain or sleet, if it's bitter or calm.
Love stains you see on buildings and know that other people existed there before you.
Love the acknowledging smile and nod a total stranger gives you as you pass each other.
Love that absolutely perfect singular downbeat at that absolutely perfect time in that song.
Love the weirdos because they're weird and you don't understand them.
Love the sound of people talking. Single out a voice in a crowd- any voice, and try to listen. Love what they're saying even though you have no idea who they are or what they're talking about. Fathom how amazing it is-- language, sound, hearing.
And for Christ's sake, love yourself no matter what state you're in and no matter who you do or don't "have." And treat yourself accordingly. If you're tired, sleep. If you're hungry, eat. If you're frustrated, take a deep breath-- people who are frustrated and tense breathe less than others, and less oxygen gets to the brain and prevents cognizant thinking-- the leading factor in downward spiraling patterns of depression.
If you're scared, turn on some lights-- figuratively and literally. Give someone a call.

For God's sake, just love.
